Just like the shell of a mollusk, a pearl is made up of calcium carbonate in minute crystalline form, which has been deposited in concentric layers. The ideal pearl is perfectly round and smooth, but many other shapes of pearls (baroque pearls) occur. The finest quality natural pearls have been highly valued as gemstones and objects of beauty for many centuries, and because of this, the word pearl has become a metaphor for something very rare, fine, admirable, and valuable.

Valuable pearls occur in the wild, but they are very rare. Cultured or farmed pearls from pearl oysters make up the majority of those that are currently sold. Pearls from the sea are valued more highly than freshwater pearls. Imitation or fake pearls are also widely sold in inexpensive jewelry, but the quality of their iridescence is usually very poor - and generally speaking, artificial pearls are easily distinguished from genuine pearls. Pearls have been harvested and cultivated primarily for use in jewelry, but in the past they were also stitched onto lavish clothing. Pearls have also been crushed and used in cosmetics, medicines, or in paint formulations.

Pearls that are considered to be of gemstone quality are almost always nacreous and iridescent, like the interior of the shell that produces them. However, almost all species of shelled mollusks are capable of producing pearls (formerly referred to as "calcareous concretions" by some sources) of lesser shine or less spherical shape. Although these may also be legitimately referred to as "pearls" by gemological labs and also under U.S. Federal Trade Commission rules,[1] and are formed in the same way, most of them have no value, except as curios.

Almost any shelled mollusk can, by natural processes, produce some kind of "pearl" when an irritating microscopic object becomes trapped within the mollusk's mantle folds, but the great majority of these "pearls" are not valued as gemstones. Nacreous pearls, the best-known and most commercially-significant pearls, are primarily produced by two groups of molluscan bivalves or clams. A nacreous pearl is made from layers of nacre, by the same living process as is used in the secretion of the mother of pearl which lines the shell.

A "natural pearl" is one that forms without any human intervention at all, in the wild, and is very rare. Many hundreds of pearl oysters or pearl mussels have to be gathered and opened, and thus killed, in order to find even one wild pearl, and for many centuries that was the only way pearls were obtained. This was the main reason why pearls fetched such extraordinary prices in the past. A cultured pearl, on the other hand, is one that has been formed with human intervention on a pearl farm. The vast majority of pearls on the market today are cultured pearls.[citation needed]

One family of nacreous pearl bivalves, the pearl oysters, lives in the sea while the other, very different group of bivalves live in freshwater; these are the river mussels such as the freshwater pearl mussel. Saltwater pearls can grow in several species of marine pearl oysters in the family Pteriidae. Freshwater pearls grow within certain (but by no means all) species of freshwater mussels in the order Unionida, the families Unionidae and Margaritiferidae.

The unique luster of pearls depends upon the reflection, refraction, and diffraction of light from the translucent layers. The thinner and more numerous the layers in the pearl, the finer the luster. The iridescence that pearls display is caused by the overlapping of successive layers, which breaks up light falling on the surface. In addition, pearls (especially cultured freshwater pearls) can be dyed yellow, green, blue, brown, pink, purple, or black.

Freshwater and saltwater pearls may sometimes look quite similar, but they come from different sources.

Natural freshwater pearls form in various species of freshwater mussels, family Unionidae, which live in lakes, rivers, ponds and other bodies of fresh water. These freshwater pearl mussels occur not only in hotter climates, but also in colder more temperate areas such as Scotland: see the freshwater pearl mussel. However, most freshwater cultured pearls sold today come from China.

Saltwater pearls grow within pearl oysters, family Pteriidae, which live in oceans. Saltwater pearl oysters are usually cultivated in protected lagoons or volcanic atolls.

Cultured pearls are the response of the shell on a tissue inplant. A tiny piece of mantle tissue of a donor shell is transplanted into a recipient shell. This graft will form a pearl sac and the tissue will precipitate calcium carbonate into this pocket. There are a number of options to produce cultured pearls: use freshwater or seawater shells, transplant the graft into the mantle or into the gonad, add a spherical bead or do it non-beaded. The large majority of saltwater cultured pearls are grown with beads, the trade name of the cultured pearls are Akoya, white or golden South sea, black Tahiti. The majority of beadless cultured pearls are mantle-grown in freshwater shells, tradename Chinese cultured pearls.

Cultured pearls (beadless or beaded) and imitation pearls can be distinguished from natural pearls by X-ray examination. Nucleated cultured pearls are often 'pre-formed' as they tend to follow the shape of the implanted shell bead nucleus. Once the pre-formed beads are inserted into the oyster, it secretes a few layers of nacre around the outside surface of the implant before it is removed after six months or more.

When a cultured pearl with bead is X-rayed, it reveals a different structure to that of a natural pearl. A beaded cultured pearl shows a solid center with no concentric growth rings, whereas a natural pearl shows a series of concentric growth rings. A beadless cultured pearl (whether of freshwater or saltwater origin) may show growth rings, but also a complex central cavity, witness of the first precipitation of the young pearl sac.

So, our fellow geek warriors went to work and created a card that uses a Micro SDHC , that when loaded with the right firmware and software can

* of course play any game,

* emulate a variety of systems( NES , ATARI, SNES, Sega Genesis, IPOD, and many more) ,

* you can also read comic books or other books,

* change the background skin to hundreds of different skins,

* you can create your own music just like a music producer,

* even for the artists out there you can draw beautiful works of art using a paint shop type program right on you DSi,

* not to mention you can play homebrew games

and I even know a guy who created an application to allow him to operate his camera directly through the DSi using the Acekard 2i. The options are limitless. The Acekard 2i not only works with the DSi , it also works with the DS , and DS lite the same way.

Now , I have an R4 as well. The R4 is another type of mod card that can do a variety of things as well , but the simple fact is that it only works with the DS and DS lite and still there are some games that won`t play on the R4 that the Acekard 2i plays flawlessly. Also , the R4 doesn`t work with the DSi so in that respect it`s just a piece of plastic!!

Now time to quell all the rumors…..

Won`t Nintendo just put out some sort of update to prevent the Acekard 2i from working?

Possibly, but the Acekard company geek warriors will be righ on their tails and just put out some firmware to keep the card working .

I live in Tokyo, Japan and this is where the Nintendo company puts out all their products first.

The Acekard 2i came out in November 2009 right after the DSi release , there have been so many rumors about the Acekard 2i not being able to work with the new DSi releases and you can`t update the firmware, ….blah, blah, blah,…..

Don`t believe the hype…

This is not an easy or quick fix; you may need to replace the entire motherboard, depending on your computer model. A technician should be able to diagnose the problem and give you a price quote on the repair. In some cases, the computer may not be worth the price of the repair.

In addition to the adapter’s LED, there should be an additional LED on your computer to indicate that the computer is getting power from the outlet. Jury-rigging should never be attempted, due to the risk of shocks, fire and damage to the computer. Do not use another computer’s adapter if it is not the same model or brand, even if it fits. Failure to match input and output voltages on laptop adapters could damage the computer, the adapter or both. Contact the manufacturer or the seller of your computer for information about replacement adapters.

If you cannot find a brand and model-specific replacement adapter for your computer, it may be possible to purchase a laptop universal power, which includes multiple, interchangeable tips. $100,000 worth of medical supplies to Haiti by MedEx Supply

PR Log (Press Release) – Jan 29, 2010 – The recent earthquake in Port Au Prince, Haiti, has left the country without the resources they need to properly care for and help their survivors. MedExSupply.com has gotten support from several of their vendors including Dynarex Corporation, a leading manufacturer of disposable medical products, to provide assistance to those in need. Both companies are located in Rockland County in New York state.

With the support of Noramie Jasmin, the mayor of Spring Valley, goods were donated to the people of Haiti that ranged from disposable hospital supplies to surgical goods and wound-care rehabilitation. Medex Supply’s customers, employees, and vendors all contributed to the initiative. The in-demand items were specifically requested to help care for survivors and included things like gauze pads, diagnostic sets, surgical staples, hand sanitizer, and more. All together, the supplies filled 44 pallets, which were packed and shipped on January 27.

“The people of Haiti are going through a trying time right now,” said Sruly Rosenberg, a Marketing Officer at MedExSupply.com. “As a company, we wanted to help them have access to the resources they need most to care for the survivors of this tragic event.”

Aromark Shipping, an ocean freight service in Newark, New Jersey, also played a big part in the relief effort. The company is family owned and has been shipping medical supplies to Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Central America, and South America for more than 15 years. They donated two 40-foot containers to ship the supplies, and also covered the shipping costs, which were estimated at $6,000.

The supplies are scheduled to arrive within two weeks and will be delivered to the Immaculate Hospital in Aux Cayes. This district is among the closest to Port Au Prince that wasn’t affected by the earthquake. One of the candidates from Haiti’s Senate, Martin Augustin, is currently in the United States. He plans to return to Haiti to ensure the goods are picked up and delivered directly to the hospital in Port Au Prince.

In the USA, the Sleep Disorders Centre is conducting a scientific sleep study to evaluate how a husband’s sleep apnea impacts on the wife’s quality of sleep and the couple’s marital satisfaction.

“This is a frequent problem within marriages that nobody is paying enough attention to,” said Rosalind Cartwright, PhD, founder of the Sleep Disorders Center. “Couples who struggle with sleep apnea have a high-divorce rate. Can we save marriages by treating sleep apnea? It’s a question we hope to answer.”

The Married Couples Sleep Study is evaluating 10 couples in which the male has been diagnosed with sleep apnea. After completing surveys about sleepiness, marriage satisfaction, and quality of life, the couple spends the night in the sleep lab where technicians determine each partner’s quality and quantity of sleep. Following two weeks of treatment, the diagnostic tests and surveys are repeated.

“Our early results are showing that the wife’s sleep is indeed deprived due to the husband’s noisy nights. This is not a mild problem. The lack of sleep for both partners puts a strain on the marriage and creates a hostile and tense situation”.

For example, in one couple, the husband’s snoring was arousing the wife out of sleep over eight times an hour. Her sleep efficiency rating, which is the percentage of time she is actually sleeping during the night, was 73 percent. The average person’s sleep efficiency is closer to 90 percent. The wife had tried ear plugs, earphones, and numerous other devices to try to sleep through the snoring. She eventually gave up and chose to sleep alone.

Following treatment, the wife’s quality of life measure jumped from a 1.2 to a 7, meaning the sleep apnea was no longer bothering her at all. Her sleepiness scale, which measures how tired she feels during the day, dropped from 12 to 6. Marital satisfaction scores improved from 3 to 5.8 and the wife’s sleep efficiency jumped from 73 percent to 82 percent.
