Refunds, Returns, Repairs Likely for Many Retailers on Post-Christmas Purchases

Nov 29, 2009 – Retailers may be alarmed by higher than usual levels of customers returning products requesting a refund, replacement or a repair in the post-Christmas sales, according to an astrologer.
Astrologer Elizabeth Ball of It's In The Stars at http://www.itsinthestarsonline.com says retailers may notice more customers than usual returning faulty or not-quite-right goods after Christmas thanks to a regular planetary phenomenon called Mercury retrograde.
Mercury goes backwards three times a year for about three weeks each time and this year will go retrograde on 26 December and will not go direct until 15 January 2010.
"Mercury rules communications which covers everything from iPods and Blackberries to laptops, printers and gaming units, and these are the items most likely to be affected if purchased in the post-Christmas sales, while internet retailers could experience problems in processing payments or with customers accidentally ordering the wrong items," Elizabeth Ball said.
"Customers who buy electronics may complain that components are missing, something is faulty, or they are incompatible with their existing items, while online shoppers may want to return items as they've bought the wrong size, colour or entered some other piece of information incorrectly," she said.
Elizabeth advises customers triple-check their arrangements, receipts, quotes, contracts, and bookings during this time.
"Since Mercury retrograde is a poor time to start anything new, this is the worst time to hire new employees. Make sure all of your staff are on-board before Christmas, or wait until the third week of January to begin hiring again. If you hire under a Mercury retrograde period, your new staff may quit earlier than expected or they won't work out, as your company - or they - are not the right fit," Elizabeth Ball said.
But it's not all bad news under a Mercury retrograde period.
"Use the Mercury retrograde period for research, contact old clients or colleagues for coffee or a meal, gather information, go through your filing, recheck your work on existing projects – in other words, do all the “re” words – revise, rethink, research, redo etc," Elizabeth Ball said.

Nov 24, 2009 – FP International is pleased to announce that their Biodegradable SUPER 8® loosefill and Biodegradable CELL-O® inflatable air cushions are compliant with EN 13427 standard of the European Packaging Directive, as certified by PIRA International, a leading independent laboratory. EN 13427 is a European standard for sustainable products under the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive and the Essential Requirements Regulation.
“Besides being compliant with the stringent EN 13427 standard, the certification notes that our SUPER 8 loosefill is made of 100% recycled polystyrene which is a valuable product feature because it means a seldom recycled waste product is diverted from landfill,” says Michael Kaminski, FP International Senior Vice President, Worldwide Engineering and R&D. “This falls in line with our Sustainable Packaging initiatives and helps reduce the burden on our environment,” adds Kaminski.
Part of the cradle-to-cradle approach for sustainable products includes how products will be used after they have fulfilled their primary purpose. A sustainable product compliant with EN 13427 standards must be either recyclable, reusable, incinerated with a low calorific output, or biodegradable. Both the CELL-O inflatable air cushions and SUPER 8 loosefill can be reused and recycled. “Although these two products do not biodegrade within the short period designated in the definition of commercial compostable, they will biodegrade within 9 to 60 months in the presence of microorganisms,” says Kaminski. He goes on to say that, “our initial tests have shown our loosefill to completely biodegrade in compost in as little time as nine months.”
The EN 13427 standard also requires that compliant products do not give off any heavy metal residues or contain any harmful or dangerous substances.

Nov 22, 2009 – Hurricane Wind Power LLC of Virginia today released a study indicating 67 percent of home wind generator system buyers indicated when polled that they have little or no experience with wind power. Of those 32 percent had purchased wind products that they felt had been misrepresented in the past. The respondents stated the the output, what the product would "do" for them, IE what it would run. technical specifications, and the product simply not working were listed among some of the reasons they felt they were dissatisfied with prior purchases. The conclusion being it is imperative to find a reputable vendor and do your research before buying. Seems many are getting sucked in by the fad of going green and leaving caution and common sense to the wind.
The most common issue I see as the owner of a wind power company is not defining clear goals before purchasing a wind turbine kit. With the love our society has for electronics these days we must consider how much power is used when selecting a product. I use around 2000 KW hours per month. Many others use more power than that. With some simple math you can soon deduct that the 500 watt wind generator will not make you self sufficient. Many business are leaving buyers with high hopes with systems that would really only output enough power for a hunting cabin.
