Dec 29, 2009 – The new UPPAbaby 2010 Vista has been creating a lot of buzz. Parents are curious to know about the new features and improvements slated to come in 2010. I had the opportunity to check out the new Vista at the ABC Expo this past September, and to see and experience the new model first hand. It was quickly evident that UPPAbaby has further refined the Vista, making it the ultimate stroller system for the active family.
The Vista has always been one of my favorite bassinet and stroller systems available on the market. Fundamentally, I love the quality construction, easy one-step fold, and bright modern colors. The products are even more impressive when you consider the telescopic handle height adjustment, bassinet attachment indicators, no flat foam filled tires, and reversible seat.
2010 brings the Vista even more of the innovative features we have come to expect from UPPAbaby. Also for 2010, UPPAbaby has added the special edition Maya Vista with an upgraded powder coated frame and redesigned wheels.
Overall, my favorite improvement for 2010 is an added “zero position” seat angle adjustment allowing for a totally upright seat position, (the 2009 model had a slight seat recline set at the highest position). This clever feature also allows more room for an older sibling using the rumble seat.
Other features to note for 2010 include:
•Extended seat height to accommodate taller children, (added approx. 1 ½” of headroom)
•More seat padding than prior models
•Re-designed brake that is simply engaged or disengaged with the tap of your foot
•Smoother rolling wheels with a single push-button removal
•Organic waterproof latex bassinet mattress developed with new eco-friendly material that is hypo-allergenic and anti-microbial. The new mattress is softer and more breathable to keep baby comfortable in any weather conditions
•Pull out hidden shade to cover baby during naptime for both the bassinet and stroller seat
•Removable and washable bumper bar

New Report: Romania Total Retail Sales Will Rise By More Than 30% By 2013

Dec 18, 2009 – The BMI Romania Retail report predicts that the country's total retail sales will rise by more than 30% by 2013, growing from US$40.87bn in 2008 to an estimated US$53.26bn by 2013. Continuing wage growth, the recent consumer-lending boom and rising disposable income following the introduction of a new flat rate of income tax are key factors behind retail market expansion. The privatisation process since 1990 and EU membership gained in 2007 have allowed retailers to make significant inroads into the market, contributing to forecast annual retail sales growth of 6.1% in dollar terms. Romania's nominal gross domestic product (GDP) was US$190.71bn in 2008, with a decline of 4.2% expected in 2009 as the economy goes into reverse. Average annual GDP growth of 2.4% is now predicted by BMI between 2008 and 2013. Although the population is forecast to decrease slightly, from 21.4mn in 2008 to an estimated 21.3mn by 2013, GDP per capita is predicted to grow by 12.8% by the end of the forecast period, reaching US$10,040. Our assumption of consumer spending per capita is for an increase from US$4,516 in 2008 to US$5,450 by 2013. Wage growth in Romania, as in many other Emerging European countries, has accelerated quickly over the past few years, having more than doubled between 2000 and 2006 from US$3,791 to US$8,286. The European Commission (EC) expects both nominal and real 2008 wage growth in Romania to have been the fastest among all 27 member states. The country has the second-biggest population in Central Europe after Poland, with some 39.2% of the total in the 20-44 years age range in 2005, according to United Nations (UN) data. This segment of the population, which represents a key element of future retail spending, is forecast to increase to 41.1% by 2010. The proportion of the population classified by the UN as 'active' was 70.1% in 2005, and should reach 70.7% by 2010. Non-food retail sub-sectors benefiting from changing patterns of consumption in Romania include clothing and footwear, which constituted 6.2% of total household monthly expenditure in 2006, up from 5.9% in 2001, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INSSE); and furniture, which accounted for 4%, up from 2.9% in 2001. BMI estimates that food and drink had a 56.1% share of the total retail market in 2008, and this is forecast to rise to 67.6% by 2013. Meanwhile, over-the-counter (OTC) pharmaceutical sales, which were worth an estimated US$720mn, or 1.8% of total retail sales, in 2008, are expected to grow to US$1.0bn, or 1.9% of total sales, by the end of the forecast period. Automotive sales are estimated at US$4.71bn in 2008, 11.5% of the total retail market, and are forecast to increase to US$13.16bn, or 24.7% of total retail sales, by 2013. Retail sales for the BMI universe of CEE countries in 2008 amounted to an estimated US$1.20trn, based on the varying national definitions. Total consumer spending for the region, based on BMI's macroeconomic database, amounts to US$1.82trn. Russia, Turkey and Poland together in 2008 accounted for an estimated 83% of regional retail sales, with their combined share expected to reach almost 85% by 2013. For Romania, the estimated 2008 market share of 3.4% is expected to be the same by 2013.

Homeless S. Africans complain ahead of World Cup

Dec 03, 2009 – Isaac Lewis, 41, said Thursday that police have arrested him for loitering six times in the past month. Before that, Lewis said police mostly left him alone. He said he's been homeless for most of his life.
Police harassment "is increasing, everyday it's increasing," he said. "It's because they want to make a good impression for the foreigners coming. We are like insects to them, or flies."
Football officials and a host of international celebrities descended on the seaside city ahead of Friday's gala tournament draw.
Lewis spoke on the eve of the draw ceremony, which was to include Nobel Peace laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a recorded address by Nelson Mandela, and a street concert. South Africa, where more than a quarter of the work force is unemployed and millions live in poverty, is hoping for an economic boost from the hundreds of thousands of tourists expected to the World Cup.
Lesley de Rueck, Cape Town's director of 2010 operations, denied the city was pressuring the homeless for the World Cup's sake. Felicity Purchase, a city councilwoman and member of a mayoral committee on economic development and tourism, said that the city wanted to get people off the streets for their own good as well as to keep the city "tidy."
Linzi Thomas, who founded a project to help street children and the homeless, was convinced Friday's draw ceremony and next year's tournament are the reasons that local authorities have been pressuring the homeless in recent months to move off the streets and into settlements like Blikkiesdorp, a grim camp on the outskirts of Cape Town.
Ziettha Meyer, 29, said she was taken off the streets and brought to Blikkiesdorp by a social worker who threatened to throw her in jail if she didn't go.
"She just came and dropped us here like we were a bunch of chickens," she said. "We didn't have a choice."
Shamielh Du Toit, 33, said she moved to Blikkiesdorp under similar circumstances six months ago.
"They came to us and said, 'people you must move away from here because we are cleaning up for the World Cup,'" she said.
Du Toit said the nearest train station to her shack is a 30-minute walk. She said can't afford the $2 roundtrip fare to Cape Town, so she can't look for work in the city. When she was living on the streets of Cape Town, she said she worked in a convenience store, earning about $7 a day.
"For me, always it was better on the streets," she said. "At least you can see people around you, and feel that you're alive," she said. She said crime and drug use are rife in Blikkiesdorp, and that she was afraid to leave her shack at night.
Blikkiesdorp's corrugated tin shacks, with a toilet and tap for every four dwellings, stretch in neat, sterile rows. The dusty settlement was created in 2008 to house 650 people evicted from buildings they had been illegally occupying, but now accommodates 1,452 families, according to Cape Town spokesman Kylie Hatton.
Cape Town Mayor Dan Plato visited the site in mid-November following complaints by residents about the lack of basic services. Du Toit said he didn't enter because a crowd gathered at the front gate and jeered at him.
City spokeswoman Hatton said that Blikkiesdorp is designed as an emergency haven for those forced from their homes by evictions, floods or fires.
"It's not a forced relocation. It's completely voluntary ... we don't target homeless people," Hatton said.
Hatton said that although the site is intended to be temporary, the lack of available housing keeps the city from putting a limit on how long people stay before being moved to better accommodation. She added that residents are encouraged to put their names on the city's housing waiting list, which has 300,000 people on it, although the need is estimated at 400,000.
Mansoor Mohamed, executive director for social development and tourism, said that while informal traders would be allowed to sell their goods during the June 11-July 11 World Cup, "illegal hawking" at traffic lights will be stopped.
According to Jason Brickhill of the Legal Resources Center, an independent human rights group based in Johannesburg, homeless South Africans in Pretoria and Johannesburg, two of the other cities where the tournament will be staged, are also being arrested by police for loitering, and illegal evictions are on the increase.
"In my mind it's linked to the World Cup," Brickhill said. "There has been talk of the need to clean up the streets, where the dirt is the people."
